The 2013 SAG Awards were a dark affair. No, really -- most of the celebs showed up in dark colors, with lots of black and dark blue on the red carpet. There were also plenty of side parts and one-shoulder cascades of waves when it came to hair.

In addition, we saw scores of jewel-toned dresses, like Jessica Chastain's ruby red gown, while Jennifer Lawrence and Amanda Seyfried took to sapphire blue.

Here are our choices for the best of the best -- the ladies who really took red carpet fashion to a whole other level.

Jessica Chastain

The 'Zero Dark Thirty' beauty rebounded from a poor showing in green at the 2013 Golden Globes in this absolutely stunning scarlet column gown by Alexander McQueen. The delicate details on the sweetheart neckline and the straight bottom were gorgeous. She paired it with a diamonds, a side part and one-shoulder waves.

Every element worked in concert and she was as beautiful as ever. We're dying to see how she wows us at the Oscars.

Jennifer Lawrence

J. Law is becoming a perennial "thumbs up" on red carpets, and she's 2-for-2 this season, following up her tomato-red Dior frock from the Golden Globes with a sapphire blue, strapples sheath from Dior. She's Dior'ing it up at every turn, and it's as though she's the design house's personal muse. She may have had walking pneumonia, but she was a blue beauty at the SAGs -- wardrobe malfunction aside.

Amanda Seyfried

Like Lawrence, the actress wore sapphire blue, choosing a Zac Posen gown with a tiered, ruffled hem. She needed to ditch that too-long Lorraine Schwartz necklace to show off her pretty, sweetheart neckline and blonde waves, but other than that, this constructing, figure-hugging gown was one of the most jaw-dropping of the evening.

Kerry Washington

One of the few stars to opt for white, Washington was a vision in a Rodarte gown with a structured bodice comprised of two panels. It was warrior chic, but the tough top was balanced by the delicate femme lacy bottom. It was a perfect pairing of opposites. She also stood out for choosing a light hue, but she knocked it out of the park with the two disparate halves.

Naomi Watts

Another rebound. Naomi Watts disappointed in Alexander McQueen at the Globes, but she bounced back in a big way in a crystal-encrusted Marchesa gown. Like so many of her peers, it was strapless and she wore a side part in her wavy hair. But Watts stood out because of those rich red lips and the dress showed off her badonkadonk. Who knew she even had one like that?

Jennifer Garner

Thanks to his directorial efforts with 'Argo,' Ben Affleck is "garnering" (sorry) the lion's share of attention right now -- but his baby mama and wife Jennifer Garner mimicked an Academy Award with her gold column Oscar de la Renta dress, which boasted lace detailing and sparkly sequins. While so many of Hollywood's elite were focusing on her hubby, Garner wowed in a quiet way.

Nicole Kidman

The Aussie actress was sleek and chic in a beaded midnight-blue Vivienne Westwood dress with quite a slit that showed off her gams with its scalloped edging. The stick-straight hair was something new from Nic, and she worked it. But that dress, which was likely handmade, bowled us over.

Marion Cotillard

The night was full of dark dresses in column shapes paired with one-shoulder, side-parted waves. Then there was Marion Cotillard, who opted for a full skirt, Dior gown with asymmetrical hem that was shorter in the front.

The white strapless top and voluminous, satiny blue-green bottom -- it even had a bow! -- were different from most of the other dresses we saw. We also love that it had pockets, which were big on carpet gowns a few years back. Her silky bob-with-bangs was just as gorgeous.
