Firefighters from Winthrop and 3 area communities, Monmouth, Manchester and Augusta, battled an early morning (May 31) blaze in town. Winthrop Fire Chief Dan Brooks told WCSH that 4 people are very lucky to have escaped.

The fire was at 4 Pine Knoll Road and appears to have started on an exterior bulkhead and traveled up the outside into the attic and 2 rooms, one on each floor. There is no known cause at this time. The State Fire Marshall is on scene and investigating.

The home is not a total loss, but is currently uninhabitable. The American Red Cross is helping the family find temporary shelter.
