British Women’s Shocking 9/11 Halloween Costume Wins Prize and Causes Uproar

When we look back at 2013, it may very well go down as the year of the offensive Halloween costume.

In the latest example of a Halloween costume that shocked people, two women in Britain got dressed up as the Twin Towers. What’s even more remarkable is the fact the pair won first place in a local bar’s costume contest.

Amber Langford and Annie Collins, both 19, included burning planes and dolls who appear to be jumping to their demise on their costumes. Strangely, Langford’s father was flying a plane in the US on September 11.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the costumes caused a whirlwind of controversy and the bar which hosted the contest had to shut down all its social media accounts while it looked into the matter.

Langford and Collins, meanwhile, have apologized:

We never meant to be offensive, but we apologise if any offence was caused. The idea was to depict a modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.”

The choice of attire continues a trend of disturbing costumes that have come to light this Halloween. People have gotten dressed up as a Boston Marathon bombing victim, as well as George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin and a member of the KKK. And, in celebrity circles, Julianne Hough’s costume also courted controversy.
