The Salvation Army kicked off its annual Red Kettle Campaign that raises money for the needy during the holiday season. A Salvation Army brass ensemble played holiday carols at Monday’s kick-off celebration at the State House.

The Salvation Army's familiar red kettles with volunteer bell ringers can be found at stores, malls and other locations throughout the holidays. Salvation Army officials say funds donated to the kettles last year enabled the organization to serve nearly 58,000 people in Maine. I think a lot about the Salvation Army at this time of the year, but they are in our communities year round, helping where they can. These funds help to keep them going all year long.

If you want to help you can can spend some time ringing the bell. Find you local Salvation Army and they will be happy to talk with you about being a bell ringer.
