Adam Lambert Leaves His Label Over That Whole ’80s Cover Album Idea

Adam Lambert
Pacific Coast News

Earlier this week, there were rumors that Adam Lambert’s label RCA was pushing for his next album to be a collection of ’80s songs. Looks like that rumor was true — and it’s now caused Lambert to part ways with the company.

The singer signed with RCA after his runner-up showing on season 8 of ‘American Idol’ in 2009. Since then, he’s released two studio albums — 2009′s ‘For Your Entertainment’ and 2012′s ‘Trespassing’ — plus several EPs and a live collection.

He often does covers during his concerts, and he does them brilliantly. But it seems he didn’t want to do an entire album of them, and that’s where the trouble started — because RCA was pushing hard for the idea. And after Adam’s devoted (and always vocal) Glamberts lit up the interwebz with their opposition, Lambert himself apparently felt the time had come to make some changes. Some big changes.

In a letter to Hollywood Reporter writer Shirley Halperin, Adam said his “heart is simply not in doing a covers album,” and that because of it, his relationship with RCA is over.

Take a look at the missive in its entirety:

Dear Shirley,

Thank you for your continued interest in, and support of, my musical career. After reading your article on July 8th, and seeing the very impassioned responses, I thought it would be good to write and let you know what is actually happening with my next album.

I’ve had an amazing few years working with the team at RCA; I admire all of them a great deal, and truly appreciate the energy & enthusiasm that went into making both “Trespassing” & “For Your Entertainment” successes.

That said, at this point, we are indeed having the oft-cited “creative differences” as to what my next project will be. Your article was correct, the label is “pushing for an (80′s) covers album,” and feels that this is the only kind of release they are prepared to support. While there are lots of great songs from that decade, my heart is simply not in doing a covers album.

Over the past four years, I have been truly fortunate to work with an amazing roster of producers, writers and engineers. Thanks to them, I have grown as both a songwriter and a vocalist. Artistically & professionally, I think it is essential that I continue with this evolution. I am already deep into writing new material with some very talented colleagues for a brand new album, and I can’t tell you how excited I am to share this new sound & direction. This music is where my heart is, and I believe that is what my fans want to hear.

So after careful consideration, I have made the decision to respectfully part ways with RCA. My passion for the music & respect for the fans will always come first. I am excited to find a new label team who shares this vision.

Yours,
Adam

RCA hasn’t responded to THR’s requests for comment, and no word yet on any other labels that may be courting Adam.

What we do know is that he just signed on to join the cast of ‘Glee,’ which will not only keep him busy, but possibly expose him to new listeners who may not have kept up with his career since his days on ‘American Idol.’ (Personally, we were hoping he’d land a spot on the ‘AI’ judging panel this season, but that’s looking increasingly less likely to happen.)

Wherever he winds up, one thing is for certain: He’ll have a devoted legion of fans with him every step of the way.
