Alicia Keys reportedly has reunited with her estranged father, Craig Cook, whom she has hasn't spoken to for many years. The R&B diva felt resentment towards him after he her left mother, Teresa, when she was only 2 years old.

Alicia, who is now a doting mom of 2-year-old Egypt, decided to bury the hatchet and reach out to her dad when her beloved grandmother died. "The process started when my [paternal] grandmother became ill," she explained to Britain's You magazine (quotes courtesy of The Boombox).

"You realize what's important when you see a person you love dearly and you're not going to have them for long. It was important to her," Keys continued. "And I saw [my father's] love for her. I realized he wasn't an evil person so I said, 'Can we start from this point on? Can we be friends? I can start to understand you and you can start to understand me.'"

From there, she contacted Cook and began to mend their broken relationship. "My father and I are fine now," she says. "I would say in the process of growing up, you realize you've been holding on to anger. I was angry then and am sure I had the right to be angry, but if you hold on to all this anger the only person you're hurting is you."

This revelation reminds us of Keys' heartfelt performance of 'Brand New Me' during 'VH1 Storytellers.' She said the song represented her feelings of "letting go" of the heartbreak and pain that she had bottled up inside of her. Their reunion must have inspired the song, which is a great example of using music as a cathartic release.

"I feel both me and my father have grown up," says Keys of their newfound relationship. "I think something happens when you become a grandparent. You have a different mind-set. There's less pressure on the relationship, so maybe it's closer. He was with Egypt last week and he loved it."

We are happy to see that Keys is bringing closure to her past and is moving forward with a healthy relationship with her dad. It's a brand 'New Day' for the Grammy-winning songbird.

In the meantime, Keys is embarking on her first U.K. tour since giving birth to Egypt. the trek begins May 18 in Liverpool, England and wraps up May 30 in London.
