Alicia Vikander won Best Supporting Actress at the 2016 Oscar for her performance in The Danish Girl, beating out fellow nominees Jennifer Jason Leigh, Rooney Mara, Rachel McAdams and Kate Winslet.

Vikander won for The Danish Girl, but could’ve just as easily have been nominated for her performance as Ava in Ex Machina and her strong performance in both films may have helped her win the prize in what was the most hotly contested acting categories.

She thanked her Danish Girl director Tom Hooper and co-star (and fellow nominee) Eddie Redmayne who she called the “best acting partner.” This was not only Vikander’s first Oscar, it was also her first time being nominated (in fact, Ex Machina was probably the first time most people even heard of Alicia Vikander). Vikander can be seen next alongside Matt Damon in the upcoming Jason Bourne.
