'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' has cast a new villain. After Jamie Foxx was announced as joining the 'Spider-Man 2' cast as Electro, today we get news that Paul Giamatti will star as Rhino. And another actress has joined the cast in a mystery role. Who could she be playing?

The Hollywood Reporter
says Giamatti is in talks to join 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2' as Rhino/Aleksei Mikhailovich Sytsevich. In the comics, the character participated in a government study that gave him super strength and speed (as well as hardened his skin with a polymer). This gave him the nickname Rhino.

Interestingly enough, Giamatti was talking about how he wanted to play Rhino in a Spider-Man movie almost two years ago in this appearance with Conan O'Brien (back when he was on 'The Tonight Show'):

In addition to Giamatti, Felicity Jones ('Like Crazy') has joined the 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' cast in an unspecified role. We're not sure who she'll be playing but Jones was one of the frontrunners for the Sharon Carter role in 'Captain America 2' (that has yet to be cast). If we're gonna hazard a guess on Jones' character, we'll go with Felicia Hardy, best known as Black Cat.

Both Giamatti and Jones join an 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' cast that includes returning members Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone along with newcomers Foxx, Shailene Woodley (Mary Jane Watson) and Dane DeHaan (Harry Osborn).

All this sort of begs the question: are they overloading 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' with too many characters? We appreciate the desire to rebuild the cinematic Spider-Man universe (particularly the desire to build to a Sinister Six appearance) but those kinds of plans take time. With the "Death of Gwen Stacy" storyline plus two villains, plus Mary Jane, plus Harry Osborn, plus possibly Black Cat...do we have space for all these characters?

Filming on 'Amazing Spider-Man 2' begins later this month for a May 2, 2014 release date.
