This week is the deadline for when the state of Maine will accept applications for its 'any deer' permit lottery. Applications are due by 11:59 pm on Friday, Aug. 15. A random drawing is scheduled for Sept. 9.

The state will issue 37,185 of the 'any deer' permits. The number is a decrease of 9,525 from last year. State officials scaled back this year's deer hunt because of the toll the harsh winter took on the deer population.

Maine's firearms hunting season for deer begins Nov. 3 and ends Nov. 29. Maine's 'resident only' deer hunting day is Saturday, Nov. 1. Hunters who do not have an 'any deer' permit may only shoot antlered deer.
