The basic necessities of life may be food, water and shelter, but a new survey suggests the modern day world might be prepared to trade in sustenance for communication, as many Americans are now spending more money on their cell phone plans than they are on things to eat.

A recent survey by CouponCabin.com discovered that nearly 21 percent of cell phone users spend more of their monthly budgets on texting, checking Facebook and uploading photos than they spend putting food on the table.

Nearly 50 percent of the survey participants reported cell phone bills of more than $100 per month, while 13 percent say they shell out more than $200 each month.

The survey conducted by Harris Interactive was based on the answers of 2,310 American adults.
