Around 8:30 Sunday evening the Augusta, Winthrop, Chelsea, Gardiner, Vassalboro and Togus fire departments responded to a house fire on Cony Rd in Augusta. A family of five lived in the home and all of them were home when smoke detectors alerted them to the blaze allowing every member safe escape. Firefighters responded promptly to the fire, bringing along a water truck due to the fact that there were no hydrants nearby. Their quick actions allowed them to save the home from total loss.

After an investigation it was discovered the cause of the fire were ashes from a wood stove being discarded too close to the home. The red cross is helping the family with their essential needs at this time.

After the fire, the Augusta Maine Fire-Rescue took to their Facebook page to share not only an update on the blaze, but also some safety warnings to help prevent future situations like this one.You can see their post, below:

If you didn't notice in the post, they also announced that The Augusta Fire Department has teamed up with the American Red Cross for a free smoke detector installation program on Saturday April 27th, 2019. You can request a free installation by calling 874-1192 ext 113 or email firesafety4me@redcross.org
