The Augusta Police Department, in partnership with the Bureau of Highway Safety, is going to be conducting patrol activities throughout the city focusing on distracted driving.

The patrol activities will be completed between April and September and will include traffic details, education and high visibility enforcement. They recently were awarded grant money in order to have extra patrol officers focusing specifically on 'texting' and 'driving and failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.'

Distracted Driving is a significant factor in many motor vehicle crashes.

According to their press release:

... the goal of the Augusta Police Department and Bureau of Highway Safety (is) to reduce the number of crashes City and State wide, especially younger drivers. Many of these motorists will be first time drivers that can be easily distracted with today’s technologies. It is the goal of the Augusta Police Department to gain voluntary compliance.
