I am the News Director for the Townsquare Media/Augusta-Waterville stations and also the host of our public affairs show, "Issues," Sunday mornings! Make sure you come say "Hi" to me at one of our many live local broadcasts.
Last Friday, March 7, was 'National Day of Unplugging'. It is exactly what it sounds like…digital detox. You put away your phones, tablets, laptops and other Internet-connected thingers for 24 hours. You do ALL 24 hours at once. Not just a few minutes here and there!!
Have you heard about the ‘Ban Bossy’ movement? It is about not labeling young women as bossy or pushy for being assertive or a leader. I know that some may think this is non-issue, but I can tell you those messages as a young person make impression that one may not even realize until much later in life. Check out this video about 'Ban Bossy'.
Healthy Maine Streets is a program that started in Skowhegan and has grown to almost 20 communities in Maine. It has also caught the attention of many other around the nation! Healthy Maine Streets is a taking on economic health and worker heath and how they can do hand in hand. This is sweet Juliet and she is looking for her new home. This spayed domestic short hair kitty has lots of love to give. Juliet is about two and came in as a stray, so they do not know much about her past. What they do know is since she has been at the HSWA Juliet has been in one of the ‘cat rooms’ with other kitty cats waiting for homes and she has been fine. As you can see by her photo, she likes her cat-naps in the sunshine. Her adoption fee is $125 includes her neutering and all her shots. Juliet is at the Humane Society Waterville Area.
The Harold Alfond Foundation (HAF) has decided that ALL babies born as Mainers will now automatically be awarded a $500 Alfond grant for college. Before this point, parents needed to fill out a little paperwork for the NextGen account for the baby to get the grant. Now, every Maine baby is in!
I love this. There are 8,000 markers that define the border between the sister nations of Canada and the United States, establishing the 'no touching zone'. ( MOM, Canada is touching me again!!) This video will explain a lot of the 'whys' of all of that.
For anyone who has been lucky enough to not experience domestic or family violence I think the question is so easy to ask, 'Why does she stay'? The reality of why someone stays in an unhealthy situation is as varied as the situations. Sunday mornings all this year we will take a look a violence in our homes and families. The week the question was 'why does she stay?' Here are answers from two central Maine women.
