Yesterday brought the very first teaser for Game of Thrones Season 7, which was especially exciting after HBO forced us to watch a block of ice melt for an hour. It featured Jon Snow (Kit Harington), Daenerys (Emilia Clarke), and Cersei (Lena Headey) all making their way towards their respective thrones. It was an awesome little tease, but the music in the trailer? Not the greatest.
Once upon a time, a man with a dream turned a small animation studio into a global empire. Much of that success was built on a series of wildly popular feature films, many of which shared a common figure: A beautiful, heroic princess. The man was Walt Disney and even after he passed away in 1966, his company continued to dedicate much of its creative energy on films (and television shows and untold tons of merchandise) dedicated to princesses. The latest, a live-action version of the studio’s Oscar-nominated cartoon Beauty and the Beast, opens in theaters on Friday. In its honor, the staff of ScreenCrush (and Mousterpiece Cinema co-host Josh Spiegel) decided to rank every single Disney princess in history.
If you can’t decide what to watch this weekend, ScreenCrush’s Staff Picks are here to help. They’re like the recommendations at an old video store, except you don’t have to put on pants or go outside to get them. Here are six things to watch this weekend:
Whether you love it, hate it, or are maintaining a neutral stance on the La La Land culture war, you’ve got to admit Damien Chazelle pulled off something pretty fantastic with his modern day ode to classic musicals. From the choreography to the film’s stunning color palette, it’s hard to deny that the filmmaker crafted one beautiful movie. With that in mind, plus the Academy’s penchant for honoring movies about Hollywood, it makes sense that Chazelle won the Oscar for Best Director on Sunday night.
Disney had double the chances of walking away with the Best Animated Feature Oscar tonight with both Moana and Zootopia up for the prize. As many predicted, the animated allegory about race relations in America took home the award.
Believe it or not, Viola Davis just won her first Academy Award. The fact that Davis won for her tour-de-force performance in Fences is far from surprising, but the fact that it took Academy voters this long — the woman’s been working for 21 years and has been nominated three times — to give her the award that’s long had her name on it is pretty shocking.
Maybe it’s Valentine’s Day. Maybe it’s the recent release of the kinky romance Fifty Shades Darker. Or maybe, if we’re being totally honest, it’s just something that’s always on our minds. Whatever the reason, the staff at ScreenCrush is obsessed with sex this week. So in the tradition of our lists on the best comedies, superheroes, sci-fi, horror, and romances of the past quarter century, let’s rank the 25 best sex scenes of the last 25 years.
Have you ever seen those movie ads on TV filled with gushing quotes from critics and thought to yourself, “I saw that movie; it was terrible. Where did they find these positive reviews?” If you have, you’re not alone — and you’re going to love ScreenCrush’s newest series, Critics Are Raving!, which balances the cinematic scales with trailers full of slightly more accurate (and slightly more negative) lines from reviews. Real critics. Real quotes. Really bad movies. That’s what’s Critics Are Raving! is all about.
If you’ve a lot of time off over the holidays, that can be a blessing and a curse. You finally have the chance to catch up on some movies! But what the heck do you watch?
