Avril Lavigne nabbed cover honors for Nylon's music issue, looking like her typical smoky-eyed rocker self.

In the feature, she talks about her new album ("I wanted to write songs and make something that was a little more artistic. I wanted to go down that road") and laying her lyrical cards on the table, face up ("I pushed myself to talk about different subjects I haven't talked about before. I didn't want to be so simple. I tried to really express myself and go deeper.")

Av also shared how the romance developed between herself and fiancé Chad Kroeger of Nickelback, a relationship that shocked the world when they decided to share it with the public.

"He does what I do -- he's a rocker, he plays guitar, he's onstage every night, he writes songs," she said about her fellow Canadian and future husband. "We were having a really good time. We hit it off as writing partners, then friends, and we started dating last summer."

The 'Here's to Never Growing Up' singer also mused about what set her apart in the musical landscape, which is overflowing with strut-their-stuff and show-their-abs divas. "I wasn't the girl baring her midriff with backup dancers and a headset microphone," she mused. "I came out and had a lot to say with my lyrics, and I played the guitar. I had a completely different getup, stage presence, everything."

That's the secret to her success and longevity.
