It turns out it was all just a mix-up. Reports earlier this week said a man posing as a United Way worker stole school supplies that were to be donated to needy families. The United Way had collected 550 backpacks and were just waiting to fill them with supplies, such as pencils, crayons and notebooks. Supplies were to be stuffed into the backpacks at Big Lots in Auburn and then distributed to families around Androscoggin County.

On Monday, an unidentified man went to Big Lots and told workers he was a United Way volunteer. All of the donated items were taken. Well, it turns out a volunteer from a United Way in York County picked up the supplies in Androscoggin County by mistake.

Help is always needed, so if you would like to donate supplies for the backpacks, you can deliver them to the United Way offices at 66 Ash St. in Lewiston.
