Battleship Cove Warships: Fun for All Ages
My Christmas gift to Patrick this year was to go to Battleship Cove. It is just south of Boston in Fall River, Massachusetts. I had never heard of it until last year and after I figured out it was a maritime museum with its historic military ships and a submarine, I was sure he would LOVE IT. And he did.
Patrick is a history buff, so he did like it. But I also learned that he has wanted to go for years and years. Patrick is an Eagle Scout. At one point his troop was going to Battleship Cove, but they had too many adult chaperons, so he was cut! So this gift made him very happy.
Battleship Cove has the largest collection of preserved US Navy ships in the world. The fleet includes five National Historic Landmarks: Battleship USS Massachusetts, Destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., Submarine USS Lionfish, and PT Boats 617 and 796.
It is a cool program they have, unless it is roped off or locked up…you can explore all the ships and the sub. Battleship Cove also does sleep overs ON THE SHIPS! We did not do that, but you can see how cool that could be, sleeping on the ‘racks’ and ‘eatin’ chow’ on board the ships. If you or your kids get a chance to do that, I would say, so go for it.
It had the things I like in a vacation: it was not too far of a drive, it was easy to find, not overly expensive, it was not crowed and it was really interesting. Even the icky weather that was in the forecast held off and it was a nice party sunny day and not too hot. Check the place out, even I had a good time!
