Belgrade Man’s Body Found in Messalonskee Lake

The Maine Warden Service says game wardens today, Aug. 24, recovered the body of Peter Wesley Townsend, 66, from Messalonskee Lake.

The body of was discovered around 10:30 a.m. by three people who were fishing. Townsend had been swimming the southwestern shoreline of Messalonskee Lake from his home in Belgrade. He was found about 100 feet from shore in 6 feet of water. The warden service’s dive team recovered the body.

The death is under investigation by the state medical examiner and the Kennebec district attorney’s office.
