Do you remember the Blizzard of ’78?  It hit in early February that year. I don’t really remember it. I kind of remember what happened to me at that time, but only little clips.  I was sick. A VERY,VERY SICK little girl. I had Reye’s Syndrome. It caused me to have a pressure build up on my brain and I remember very little. Because they did not feel they could treat it at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, it was off to Boston Children’s Hospital…in the middle of this blizzard...in a helicopter!

Honestly, I don’t remember much of this. I only remember being loaded into the helicopter on a gurney. It was a very bumpy adventure. But I know they opened Bangor International Airport so the Maine Army National Guard could airlift me out. They flew me to Boston…where they have to open Logan International Airport so we can land. At that time travel was banned in Boston, the transport was allowed through to get me to the hospital. I was treated and recovered. But my mother and I were kinda trapped in Boston Children’s Hospital because travel was banned in Boston and my aunt and uncle could not come get us! We were there for days longer than needed. I do remember that part and well, hanging out trapped in a hospital when you do not need to be there is the ultimate definition of ‘not fun’.
