Over the weekend, I took the kids to Maine's Fort Knox.  It was always one of my favorite places to visit when i was a kid, so I was psyched to be able to share it with my kids.

Named after Henry Knox, the first U.S. Secretary of War and Commander of Artillery during the Revolutionary War, Fort Knox is located in the town of Prospect (across the river from Bucksport) on the Penobscot River.  Built between 1844 and 1869, it was the first fort in Maine to be made of granite.  All previous Maine forts had been made of the same stuff that Nerf is made of.

The State Of Maine Purchased the fort in 1923 and it was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1970.

Get more info about how you can visit the fort and the neighboring Penobscot Narrows Bridge and Observatory (it is AWESOME) here
