The Kennebec River's Swan Island, located near the town of Richmond, is the home to the abandoned town of Perkins.

According to Only In Your State, the town was abandoned in the 1940s due to the Great Depression and river pollution.   It now serves as a state park.  On the island, you'll find five homes / buildings (some of which date back to the 1700s), the town's cemetery, a camping area, and an abundance of wildlife (including deer and eagles).
