Clint Eastwood Makes Our Day, Talks to a Chair With Someone In It

Clint Eastwood has a new movie to promote, which means every reporter and interviewer on the press junket list now has the chance to ask him about his -- let's call it "unconventional" -- empty chair speech at the Republican National Convention. Which also means he’s had a chance to explain himself.

And he has. Sort of.

Simply put, Eastwood says that the Republican Party was dumb to ask him to speak at their convention.

Really. That’s what he said. That was his excuse.

More specifically, he went on 'Extra' and said, “If somebody’s dumb enough to ask me to go to a political convention and say something, they’re gonna have to take what they get.”

Hard to argue with that logic.

He also told ‘Good Morning America’ that he hadn’t planned to talk to an empty chair. He said -- and this may be where the “dumb enough to ask me to say something” part comes in -- that he had no idea what he was going to say when he went on stage. Someone offered him a chair backstage so he could sit down, and instead he took it onstage and held a conversation with it as though it were President Obama. And cringe-worthy hilarity ensued.

Those aren’t the only juicy revelations coming from the erstwhile Dirty Harry.

During an appearance on Ellen DeGeneres' show, he told the openly-gay host, “The condition of society right now, with the high unemployment rates and the tremendous debt we’re increasing and the government spending, we’d think there’d be [many more worthy issues] to think about [rather] than worrying about gay marriage.”

No matter what his opinions are, we’re just glad there have been people in all those chairs he’s been talking to lately.
