Comedian Dave Chappelle Walks Out on Heckling Crowd [VIDEOS]
Comedian and 'Chappelle's Show' star Dave Chappelle was in the midst of a comeback show in Hartford, Conn. when he walked out of his own headlining gig. The cause? Hecklers who don't quite understand what heckling is.
Videos of the incident went viral, with misleading information describing Chappelle's response as a "meltdown." Here's what actually happened.
After some rude crowd members began yelling things like "Rick James!" at the star, Chappelle sat on a stool in silence, likely fuming and simultaneously trying to get them to quiet down.
When that failed, Chappelle did go on a brief rant about the show he was on, telling the audience, "I f---ed up when I left my show, you know why? 'Cause my show only has to be 22 minutes of television. I could've went on television, I could've read the phone book for 22 minutes and I would've got $50 million dollars." He continued, "I shoulda done that sh*t but my ego wouldn't let me. Tonight is different. Tonight my contract says 25 minutes and I have three minutes left. and when my three minutes is up, my ass is gone."
The crowd began to boo Chappelle, leading him to walk offstage -- and leading the attendees to demand refunds for the show.
Many who are unfamiliar with the business and creative aspects of comedy blamed Chappelle for his actions, but most other comedians and performers sided with the star, most notably Patton Oswalt. The comedian, actor and writer took to Twitter to school Chappelle's critics:
