As a big history geek, I was really excited to find out about Old Fort Western when I moved to Augusta.  If you're looking for something fun, and educational, for the entire family to do, you've got to check it out.

"Old" Fort Western was originally built as a British colonial outpost in 1754 (during the French and Indian War).  Actually, it was built further down the Kennebec River (in a more secure place), disassembled, shipped to what is now Augusta, and re-assembled.  It was set up as a fortified trading post in order to promote settlement of the area.  Following the war it was purchased by its former commanding officer, James Howard, and operated as a trading post.

During the Revolutionary War, it was the stopping place of Benedict Arnold during his march to Quebec.

Additionally, it was the Howard family home and was used as an apartment complex.

If you are an Augusta resident, there is no admission fee.  But, the fees are very affordable and the money goes to keep the fort operating.  Get more info here and check out some of the pics I took during my recent visit.
