‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ Details from Director Matt Reeves
Not much is known about ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,’ Matt Reeves‘ sequel to ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes,’ but we do know it has a revolutionary aspect and that Caesar (Andy Serkis) will once again be front and center in this continuation of the ape saga. In anticipation of this week’s Comic-Con panel for the film, Reeves revealed some details about his vision.
In an interview with Thompson on Hollywood, Matt Reeves (‘Cloverfield’) took some time to explain his vision for ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.’ As it turns out, Reeves made some changes to the earlier draft by screenwriters Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, ensuring that we see exactly how Caesar and his fellow primates took over the world:
When I got involved the story initially took place further down the line, the apes had evolved fast. What excited me was the idea of going back to finding a way to get on the path, I did not want to jump so far ahead. I restarted the first movie that put you in the heart of the apes, knowing that in the canon, the ’68 movie I saw as a kid, you know what that world is about. That was the beginning. So this leads to the original film. How does that work? That is where it’s going. I did not want to go too far and miss how it developed.
Reeves also expresses that the emotional depth and connection with Caesar is the major driving force of this film, and the story will be told through his point of view:
I wanted to extend what I thought was achieved so brilliantly, the emotional connection with Caesar, with a greater sense of realism in the world, the face of it and scale of it. Where the first movie ends on the precipice of a major shift about to happen in the world, I wanted to come into that story. It’s definitely a bigger ape world, but it still centered on Andy Serkis as Caesar, it’s his POV.
The director goes on to describe the location of the ape civilization and how important the natural elements were to filming the sequel. Be sure to check back here later this week for more from Matt Reeves and ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ when we report back from Comic-Con 2013 in San Diego.
