It was brought to my attention a few weeks ago that, apparently, I drink too much coffee.  I didn't think that was possible, but that's what some people say.  So, how much coffee is too much coffee?

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 400 milligrams of caffeine per day is fine. That's the equivalent of 4 cups of brewed coffee.

I have about five 8 oz cups a day.  I start my day with a large coffee from a store or restaurant (worth about two cups) and then have about another 3 over the course of the day.  Slightly over the maximum recommended amount, but I don't have any issues (that I know of) because of it.

Of course, drinking too much coffee (and ingesting too much caffeine) is not a good thing.  Ingensting more than 500 to 600 mg a day may cause side effects such as:

  • Insomnia
  • Nervousness
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Stomach upset
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Muscle tremors
