Well, the .sucks domains are now open for registration, according to Inside Counsel and, after June 19th (the original date was today, May 29th), the average Joe will be able to buy them for whatever purpose they choose. Why the extension? All of the publicity has probably enabled the company selling these .sucks names the ability to make some bank.

During the Sunrise Period (now to 6/19), trademarks registered with ICANN Trademark Clearinghouse may purchase their name in order to protect it from being picked up and used to demean and/or degrade their brand. The price during this period, however, is $2499! Seems like a lot of money to protect your name but big businesses with deep pockets who don't want to take a chance having their image tarnished may be spending the money.

When the .sucks names become available to the general public, they'll cost $9.95 a year.

While this sounds like extortion (the $2499 fee), there aren't a lot of options here. And while a .sucks domain might be good for some sites (cancer, bullies, etc.), WalMart, Microsoft and others, who have already been lampooned by .com sites, might not feel as warm and fuzzy about it.

Only time will tell what ultimately happens. And look for other domains which are coming including .gripe and .wtf.

Oh, the company selling the domain names is Vox Populi Registry Ltd. and they are based in Canada.
