Police had quite a mess on their hands during the early morning commute in Richmond on May 28 after a driver of a truck fully loaded with potatoes swerved to avoid a moose and ran off the road, spilling the load of potatoes.According to Maine Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland, the driver, Marc Benoit, 63, of Hampden, Mass., told troopers he swerved the tractor trailer to avoid a moose in the southbound lane of I-295 in Richmond around 10:15 pm on May 27.  The truck was coming from northern Maine bound for Connecticut. The impact broke the box portion of the truck in half, spilling the load, McCausland said.

Benoit suffered minor injuries to his legs and was transported to Mid Coast Hospital, McCausland said. Crews were still at the accident scene and the truck and its load of potatoes had not been removed as of 9 am on Wednesday.
