The chairman of a blue ribbon education commission says all future meetings will be open to the public after Maine House Speaker Mark Eves, a Democrat, called for sanctions over a closed-door meeting at the Republican governor's mansion earlier this week.

The attorney general's office has said the first commission meeting should've been open to the public. A spokeswoman for Gov. Paul LePage says it was an "informal get-to-know-you gathering."

LePage says the executive branch will no longer participate in the blue ribbon commission.

WCSH-TV reports Deputy Education Commissioner Bill Beardsley says he will continue as chair of the commission. The next meeting is scheduled for June at Oxford Hill High School.

Beardsley says the commission must study school funding and figure out how to improve student performance. (AP)
