A Fairfield woman charged in the death of her newborn son will be placed in the state's custody for a mental competence review.

The Morning Sentinel reports that 21-year-old Kayla Stewart's case will be delayed possibly until the end of June as she undergoes an evaluation at Riverview Psychiatric Center, the state psychiatric hospital.

The Fairfield woman pleaded not guilty in March to murder and manslaughter in the death of her infant son.

Police arrested Stewart on Jan. 22 after police found the remains of the baby in the garage she shared with her boyfriend, Nicholas Blood.

Stewart's attorney has argued that Stewart had a miscarriage and panicked. The medical examiner says the full-term baby was born alive and died from asphyxiation or neglect. (AP)
