Uh, wait — is Fifty Shades Darker a ’90s thriller? That certainly seems to be the case based on the first full trailer for the upcoming sequel to Fifty Shades of Grey, in which Dakota Johnson’s Anastasia Steele reunites with Jamie Dornan’s Christian Grey for another quasi-erotic outing. This time there are no rules (or any humor that we can see), but there are lots of fireworks, a masquerade party, a new beau and a stalker…or two?

That ’90s thriller vibe makes sense, as the new sequel was directed by James Foley, the man behind Fear, the Reese Witherspoon and Mark Wahlberg film from 1996 — you know, the one where Wahlberg carves “Nicole 4 Eva” into his chest and shouts a lot. Anyhow, Fifty Shades Darker doesn’t look much like its predecessor, which was directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson from Kelly Marcel’s surprisingly witty script. This time, Fifty Shades author E.L. James’ husband, Niall Leonard, handles scripting duties.

We won’t know just how Fifty Shades Darker compares to the first film until next February, but right now, it’s looking a little more serious — and kind of wacky, even. What is this crazy Eyes Wide Shut masquerade party? And what’s up with Christian’s former lovers, played by Bella Heathcote and Kim Basinger?

When a wounded Christian Grey tries to entice a cautious Ana Steele back into his life, she demands a new arrangement before she will give him another chance. As the two begin to build trust and find stability, shadowy figures from Christian’s past start to circle the couple, determined to destroy their hopes for a future together.

Fifty Shades Darker also stars Hugh Dancy, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Ora, Jennifer Ehle, Tyler Hoechlin, Max Martini, Eloise Mumford, Luke Grimes and Eric Johnson, and hits theaters on February 10, 2017.
