What thing to know about Governor LePage. He does what he says he'll do. He said he'd sign the constitutional carry bill and yesterday, he did just that. In 90 days (the length of time necessary for the law to take effect), a concealed carry permit will no longer be necessary to carry a weapon in Maine. Open carry is already allowed.

What this means is that, when the law takes effect, Maine will become one of a handful of states, which includes Vermont, that will allow concealed carry (constitutional carry) with out a permit.

It is my hope that anyone who now decides to carry a weapon, if you haven't had proper training, get it! Gun Owners of Maine (GOME) has provided a great resource here. The actual training is not yet available but will be by the time this new law takes effect.

Big thanks to the Gun Owners of Maine, NRA-ILA and others who helped get this done. Also, to Maine Republican Sentor, Eric Brakey, who introduced the legislation.

Here's the Maine Republic email alert:

Constitutional/Permitless Carry legislation, Legislative Document 652, was signed into law today, July 8, by Governor Paul LePage.

As previously reported, LD 652, sponsored by Senator Eric Brakey (R-Androscoggin), will allow all residents of Maine who are not otherwise prohibited by law from possessing a firearm the right to carry concealed without obtaining a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP). LD 652 will also leave the current carry permitting system intact for those who wish to participate in reciprocal concealed carry permit agreements when traveling to other states.
