Today is Canada’s 148th birthday. A day our neighbors to the north celebrate the birth of their nation. Today in Canada celebrations often consist of a morning parade, family activities and fireworks at night. Canada became a nation on July 1, 1867.Today being Canada Day I thought I’d dispense a few trivia facts about Canada.

Canada is comprised of 10 provinces and three northern territories. Canada is geographically the 2nd largest country in the world with about 1/10th of the population of the U.S.

Sir John A. MacDonald was their first Prime Minister, “O’ Canada” became the national anthem officially in 1980 and the Trans-Canada Highway connects the west coast to the east coast by road.

One of Canada’s provinces, Newfoundland is 30 minutes ahead of the Atlantic Time Zone and 1.5 hours ahead of us. I didn’t understand the half hour difference when I lived in Canada.

The national capitol of Canada is Ottawa, Ontario, Stephen Harper is the current Prime Minister, CBC is the national Canadian broadcaster and road signs along with most other common measurements are metric.

A few popular recording artists from Canada that aren’t Justin Bieber include Carly Rae Jespen, Sarah McLachlan, Alanis Morissette, Tegan & Sara, Avril Lavigne, Nickelback, Arcade Fire, and Nelly Furtado.
