Gardiner was filled with smoke and water yesterday (July 16) as firefighters battled a downtown blaze on Water Street. Apartments and businesses were evacuated. The fire, which began late afternoon, took about 4 hours to get under control.

The fire displaced 12 tenants and the four damaged buildings are likely a total loss. Four were injured, including three firefighters and a tenant was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. Twelve were displaced by the fire.

Gardiner Mayor Thom Harnett called downtown Gardiner fire a ‘community disaster.'
