I fell in love with baseball in 1967. It was the 'Impossible Dream' season of the Boston Red Sox. One of the most memorable players on that team was their slugging first baseman (sometimes third baseman) George Scott. He died today (July 29) in Mississippi. He was 71.

'Boomer' debuted in the majors with Boston the year before the magical summer of '67. He played eight seasons and part of another for the Red Sox from 1966 to 1971 and again from 1977 to 1979. Scott was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2006

One of my lasting Fenway moments involved 'Boomer.' I was sitting in the bleachers and little Freddie Patek of the KC Royals got hurt and Scott picked him up and carried him off the field. A 'Gentle Giant.' RIP.
