Ever since it was announced that the global GPS company Garmin was going to buy local Yarmouth mapmaker DeLorme, hard-core Mainers were worried that the company would stop making the iconic Maine atlases that are a staple here in Vacationland, right next to the year-round ice scraper in the back seat.

Great news on this score: The company has announced that it will continue to make the legendary maps, and the tradition of pulling it out of the back seat and flipping through it while softly saying "...now where the hell are we" will definitely be handed down to the next generation.

The Bangor Daily News posted a story about a woman in Bangor who has had her Gazetteer for more than 40 years, and isn't willing to part with it yet.
