‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Clip: You’ll Soon Remember the Name, Star-Lord

Star-Lord? Who’s Star-Lord? If you’re not familiar with this hero from the farthest reaches of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you’re not alone. Djimon Hounsou’s Korath is just as unaware of his clout, as shown in the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy‘ clip, but both he and everyone will soon know the name.

Chris Pratt leaps into his first superhero role as Star-Lord, a skilled thief-turned-intergalactic hero with plenty of one-liners to throw at his adversaries. In ‘Guardians of the Galaxy,’ he comes to lead an unlikely team of misfits, revenge-seeking superbeings and one walking, talking, gun-slinging raccoon (or, to be more accurate, an alien that looks like a raccoon).

Marvel gave us a taste of its space opera through the initial trailer, but the first ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ clip, which premiered on MTV, sheds more light on this lesser-known property. If you’re unfamiliar with the storyline, here’s the official synopsis:

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

Though it hasn’t been made clear, we’re assuming this orb is one of the Infinity Stones that were referenced in ‘Thor: The Dark World‘ and are the overarching driving force behind the Marvel films. We know that both the Tesseract (from ‘Captain America‘ and ‘The Avengers‘) and the Aether (from ‘Thor: The Dark World’) are two of them, and Thanos, the big baddie teased in the ‘Avengers’ post-credits scene, wants his hands on all of them. Director James Gunn previously said that Thanos will be making an appearance in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ in some capacity, as he will be the puppet pulling the strings of the main players.

As many fans have already seen ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ we’re all eager to discover what Marvel’s most ambitious project to date has in store for us, and we will come release time on August 1.
