Maine High School Basketball Expands To 5 Classes

After much debate the Maine Principles Association passed the 5-class system for high school basketball by a vote of 67-29 on Thursday morning.The passage will take affect for the 2015-16 basketball season and include class AA, A, B, C and D. The proposal and ultimate vote of approval stems from the ever changing enrollments of schools and the need to create more competitive balance within each class.

The change to 5 classes also means adding another tournament for class AA boys and girls in each region. MPA Executive Director Dick Durost said the basketball committee will get together next week and begin discussions on how to fit all the classes and games into tournament week.

The other votes included changing the regional designations from Eastern and Western Maine to Northern and Southern Maine. Also receiving approval was changing the Heal Point designation between classes from 5 to 2 points.
