I've lived most of my adult life in Maine, but the few years I lived out of state, the thing I missed the most (besides family) was Italian Sandwiches!

If you lived in Maine and moved away, you know exactly what I mean. You just can't get them anywhere else. There are hoagies, subs, grinders, heroes... you name it, but no Italians. When I would come home for a visit, one of the last stops before leaving was Sam's Italian Shops. They are still my favorite!

...is credited with creating the original Italian. According to their website: In 1902... on the Portland, Maine waterfront a young Italian immigrant named Giovanni Amato began selling fresh baked rolls filled with meat, cheese and fresh vegetables to his fellow countrymen working the docks.

That's all I have. I have to go. I'm craving a uniquely Maine 'Italian!'
