Jim Nabors, TV’s Gomer Pyle, Comes Out After Marrying His Longtime Partner [VIDEO]
Jim Nabors, best known for his role as Gomer Pyle on the ’60s sitcoms ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.,’ married his partner of 38 years, Stan Cadwallader, in Seattle, Wash. on Jan. 15 — just weeks after same-sex marriage became legal in the state.
Break out the noisemakers and onion dip!
Nabors announced the nuptials on the Hawaiian news station KPHO — and it was also his first official coming out. He says that while he’s never kept his sexual preference hidden from co-workers and friends, he’s also never “made a public spectacle of it.”
“I’m 82 and he’s in his 60s … we’ve been together for 38 years and I’m not ashamed of people knowing, it’s just that it was such a personal thing, I didn’t tell anybody,” Nabors admitted.
“I’m very happy that I’ve had a partner of 38 years and I feel very blessed,” he added. “And, what can I tell you, I’m just very happy.”
Nabors met Caldwallader back in 1975 in Honolulu, where they currently live.
Too bad they couldn’t have gotten married in their home state. If news anchors there can wear Hawaiian shirts while on the air, gay marriage should be legal in all 50 states.
One day America, one day.
