‘Star Trek 3′ – Will J.J. Abrams Still Direct?
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve heard the news: JJ Abrams is officially directing ‘Star Wars: Episode VII.‘ Even if you didn’t hear it, you surely felt the rumble that shook the entire planet after the news caused the entire internet to break in half. While fans and critics alike debated what this meant for the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, another question arose. With Abrams departing for a galaxy far far away, what was going to happen to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise?
Although Abrams jumping from ‘Trek’ to ‘Wars’ and from Paramount to Disney feels like a backstabbing political maneuver straight out of ‘Game of Thrones,’ it looks like he’ll still hang around his old franchise for at least one more installment. According to the LA Times, Abrams will, at the very least, produce the inevitable ‘Star Trek 3′ and there’s still a chance that he may direct it…although you shouldn’t hold your breath. Hollywood, like Washington DC or Westeros, is a place full of bad blood and friends-turned-enemies. There’s a strong chance that Paramount will feel burned by Abrams’ franchise jumping. Or they may realize that staying in the Abrams business is lucrative and welcome him back with open arms in a few years. Only the insiders know how everyone really feels.
In addition to his producing duties on ‘Star Trek,’ Abrams and his Bad Robot production company are also committed to producing the next ‘Mission: Impossible’ movie for Paramount. If there are bad feelings between Abrams and the studio, they’re going to have to put them aside — there are hugely successful and highly popular franchises at risk here!
