Kelly Clarkson Mashes Up Alanis Morissette’s ‘That I Would Be Good’ + Kings of Leon’s ‘Use Somebody’

Kelly Clarkson can sing the phone book and sound amazing, so it's no surprise that she performs some killer cover songs just as well as her own hits. The 'American Idol' alum mashed up Alanis Morissette's 'That I Would Be Good' and Kings of Leon's 'Use Somebody' into a seamless ballad.

The track begins with Morissette's ballad of feelings of inadequacy. It starts out rather loyal to the original, save for Clarkson replacing the Canadian crooner's warbling with her own soulful pipes. However, the melancholy ode to the pressures of fame gives way to the "oh whoa, oh whoa" hook from 'Use Somebody' briefly -- then comes back to Morissette's lyrics again.

At about 2:25, Clarkson roars into Kings of Leon's chorus with a crescendo. It's an unexpected combination, but thematically and sonically, they work together perfectly.

The mashup is from Clarkson's 'Smoakstack Sessions, Vol. 2.' The compilation is available with 'Greatest Hits: Chapter One,' due Monday, Nov. 19. The album also features new tracks 'Catch My Breath,' 'Don't Rush' and 'People Like Us.'
