We all know David Letterman, the funny guy on after the 11 pm news on CBS affiliates. On this date, February 1st, 1982 'Late Night With David Letterman' debuted. Bill Murray was his first guest. Murray was also his first guest on the newer 'Late Show With David Letterman' on CBS.

David Letterman on NBC aired at 12:35 am after Johnny Carson, like Jimmy Fallon now follows Jay Leno. You have to understand, back in the 80's and 90's there wasn't the traffic jam of late night comedy talk show hosts like there is today. I believe there were just three or four. Carson, Letterman, Tom Snyder and a revolving door of people who failed like Rick Dees, Chevy Chase and Alan Thicke.

I liked Dave better on the NBC show personally, but he's still funny today. I miss the home office of the Top Ten. He had bigger antics, like Velcro jumping, working the drive thru and  back in the old days he did more with the audience. I guess he was younger and newer on the market and had to make a splash and sometimes literally did just that.

It's been 31 years for David Letterman in late night.
