'The Leroy Smith Benefit Bash and Memorial Jam' will be Sunday, May 18, 2pm - 6pm at the Wharf, 132 Water St. in Hallowell. The band 'Working Class,' which once included Leroy Smith II, will play during the memorial jam. All other musicians are encouraged to play, as well.

According to the events facebook page:

The world as we know it lost an amazing, kind, caring and all around good person when Leroy Smith was taken from us so tragically. Help us remember Leroy the way he lived, with music, friends and fun.

Police have said that the elder Smith was murdered last Saturday by his son, Leroy Smith III, in the apartment the two shared in Gardiner. The father's remains were discarded in the woods in Richmond. Leroy Smith III has been charged with murder.

The upcoming benefit will also include a potluck supper. There will be a 50/50 drawing and donations will be accepted. The elder Smith had no life insurance and friends have said providing a funeral will be financial burden.

A GoFundMe.com fundraisng page has also been set-up. Once memorial expenses are covered from donations, the family will be donating the remaining funds to a cause that helps families who struggle with mental illness to get the help they need in memory of Leroy Smith.
