Listen to Lorde Cover Tears for Fears’ ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World’
The 16-year-old New Zealand songstress puts a very Lorde twist on the U.K. band’s 1985 No. 1 single, ‘Everybody Wants to Rule the World.’ The original’s light, sing-songy sound is supplanted by sparse orchestration and a haunting mood much more befitting the dark themes in the upcoming ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ film, in theaters Nov. 22.
Tears for Fears tweeted out some “cross generational love” to Lorde regarding the cover, which Lorde retweeted to her own followers:

Regardless of the track’s sound, the song’s lyrics have never been particularly cheerful, according to Tears for Fears’ Curt Smith. “The concept is quite serious — it’s about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes,” he was quoted as saying.
Themes that are right up Lorde’s alley! You can listen to her version of the entire song here. The ‘Hunger Games: Catching Fire’ soundtrack is out Nov. 19.
