‘Lords of Salem’ Trailer: Rob Zombie Gets Polished, Doesn’t Leave His Roots (or Wife) Behind
‘The Lords of Salem‘ has been an interesting project since word broke a few years back, and the first official ‘Lords of Salem’ trailer has us intrigued, to say the least. Rob Zombie‘s latest seems a bit more polished and ambitious than previous efforts, and that’s not a bad thing.
Rob Zombie’s track record as a director has been… bumpy, to say the least. ‘House of 1000 Corpses’ was a fun, brutal, trashy horror throwback, but its sequel, ‘The Devil’s Rejects,’ was what you might call his masterpiece — a 70s-flavored, gritty and deep-fried thriller that paid homage to the genres that shaped Zombie while creating a monster all its own. He hasn’t been able to put out anything on that level since, with both of his ‘Halloween’ films feeling like misshapen, deformed efforts that sought to sew too many pieces together and stuff them full of a lot of ideas.
But judging by this teaser, ‘The Lords of Salem’ promises a better Zombie experience — something a little more polished, if those shots of the opera house and the more abstract visuals are any indication. There are seems to be some Italian Giallo inspiration at play with the tale of a radio DJ who inadvertently awakens a coven of witches by playing a particular heavy metal song on the air.
The DJ is played by Zombie’s wife, Sheri Moon Zombie — because it’s not a Zombie flick unless his wife is involved. The rest of the cast is an impressive who’s-who list of classic heavies: Ken Foree, Patricia Quinn, Dee Wallace, Bruce Davison, Meg Foster, Maria Conchita Alonso, and Barbara Crampton. ‘The Lords of Salem’ was recently acquired by Anchor Bay out of the Toronto International Film Festival, and we should be seeing a release relatively soon.
