At least nine Maine communities held vigils in response to the attack on a nightclub in Florida.

Matt Moonen, executive director of EqualityMaine, said the events Monday evening "will enable us to come together to mourn those lost in Orlando."

The terrorist attack on a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, over the weekend left 49 people dead.

The city of Orlando mourned its dead Monday with flowers, candles and vigils.

In Maine, vigils were planned Monday evening in Portland, Bangor, Auburn, Bar Harbor, Damariscotta, Hallowell, Farmington, Ellsworth and Machias. More are scheduled later in this week.

President Barack Obama will travel to Orlando, Florida, Thursday to pay his respects to the victims of last weekend's nightclub shooting and to stand in solidarity with the community. (AP)
