Maine's secretary of state has banned just short of 6,000 vanity license plate messages, but he may be forced to loosen up after revisions were made to a state regulatory law last year.

The Sun Journal reports language in the law permitting the Department of Motor Vehicles to reject plates with "obscene, contemptuous, profane or prejudicial" was removed in 2015.

Secretary of State Matt Dunlap says plates containing "fighting words" remain banned.

Dunlap says state policy now outlines that only messages considered racial slurs, or that are clearly discriminatory, promote violence or illegal activities will be rejected.

The law was amended after officials rejected a breast cancer survivor's request for the plate "BQQBS" on Maine's breast cancer awareness license plate series. (AP)
