The ‘Men in Black’ Are Coming Back With a New Spinoff in 2019
On the heels of today’s Charlie’s Angels casting news, Sony has set an official release date for another major potential franchise relaunch. A new Men in Black spinoff / reboot will hit theaters in 2019, taking audiences back to the hidden world of secret-secret-agents and aliens. Not to be confused with that long-rumored 21 Jump Street crossover (more on that in a moment), this one will introduce new characters while honoring the established universe of its predecessors.
Per Deadline, Sony has set a May 17, 2019 release date for a new installment in the wildly successful Men in Black franchise. Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, the writing duo behind the first Iron Man and Transformers: The Last Knight, wrote the script for the untitled project, which is being described as a reboot / spinoff in the vein of Jurassic World. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones will not reprise their roles from Barry Sonnenfeld’s original trilogy.
Marcum and Holloway’s Men in Black will introduce new agents to the secret, unofficial organization tasked with monitoring and policing alien refugees and protecting the Earth from intergalactic threats. The untitled spinoff will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg alongside original Men in Black producers Laurie MacDonald and Walter F. Parkes.
Sony had initially planned the next Men in Black as a 21 Jump Street crossover, with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s undercover cops joining the titular top secret agency. According to Deadline, that project is still in the works, but the studio wants to release the new spinoff first. Marcum and Holloway’s Men in Black isn’t the only major franchise relaunch Sony will release in 2019; Elizabeth Banks is directing the studio’s reboot of Charlie’s Angels, with Kristen Stewart and Lupita Nyong’o in early talks for two of the three leads.
