Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap says motorcycle enthusiasts who want to earn a motorcycle endorsement on their driver's licenses must now complete a rider education course.

A recent rule change includes a provision to require Mainers to complete the Basic RiderCourse. Dunlap says it's a "hands-on rider education course."

The rule change is in effect now and was enacted as emergency legislation. Dunlap says last year was the deadliest for motorcyclists since 1991. There were 32 motorcycle fatalities on Maine roads.
The course is 15 hours and is offered at schools throughout the state.

Gov. Paul LePage signed the changes into law on April 15. (AP)
